Ever wondered how National Geographic photographers get those amazing pictures? Ever wish you could get advice straight from them? Well, here’s your chance. Veteran National Geographic photographers Bob Caputo and Cary Wolinsky today launched PixBoomBa.com, a different kind of photo tips web site.

Using humor and a self-deprecating style, Wolinsky and Caputo share insights gleaned from decades at the top of their field. PixBoomBa is aimed at all those with a passion for picture taking and transcends the myriad photography blogs and camera review sites by making the technical and aesthetic elements of good photography accessible to anyone who wants to make better images, no matter their skill level, equipment, or budget.

“We learned early on to take our work seriously, but not take ourselves too seriously,” says Caputo. “If we can make pretty good pictures, anyone can,” Wolinsky adds. “Sometimes people just need a few tips to get them going.”

The site offers many one-of-a-kind features including Tips Flix, a series of videos featuring Caputo and Wolinsky imparting techniques and wisdom on a variety of topics. The two play off each other in ways that both inform and entertain, and may even cause you to laugh out loud. The site’s Actual Info pages are loaded with illustrated photo tips, and frequent open-to-all Contests invite users to show off their best pictures. PixBoomBlog, written by Caputo and guest contributors, discusses any- and everything having to do with photography—and lots of other stuff too.

While working for National Geographic and other publications, PixBoomBa’s founders photographed subjects ranging from landscapes, wildlife, and high fashion to famines, genocide, AIDS, and wars. They have been arrested, had guns pointed at them, and had to duck as bullets flew around towns being blown apart. And they’ve been welcomed into homes all over the world and given sustenance by people who sometimes did not have enough food to feed their own families. Along the way, they learned a thing or two about making photographs. Caputo also authored five books in the popular National Geographic Photography Field Guide series, and Wolinsky co-founded the Center for Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University.

The inception of PixBoomBa.com was a few years back, when Wolinsky and Caputo hosted Get the Picture, a popular photo tips segment on National Geographic Channel’s evening TV news show. Since then, the duo has been looking for an opportunity to bring their unique blend of humor and knowledge back to their audience of photography enthusiasts.

About Pixboomba:
PixBoomBa is dedicated to providing solutions to many of the challenges faced by serious hobbyist photographers, and to doing it with humor. Caputo and Wolinsky believe that photography is all about exposure, and hope to build a community of photo enthusiasts who will share images, thoughts, questions and concerns so that everyone might communicate their visions better.
