The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) is pleased to support the 2nd Annual Mid-South Regional Pickleball Tournament June 4-6, 2010 in the Exerfit Gymnasium, Baton Rouge. With its unique name, pickleball is rapidly growing into an international sport for players of all ages. The Mid-South Regional Tournament has divisions for 18 & under through 80+ years old. There is no charge to watch great pickleball play.

Pickleball is a fun court sport played on a badminton-sized court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic ball similar to a whiffle ball and wood or composite paddles about twice the size of ping-pong paddles. It can be played indoors or outdoors, is easy for beginners to learn – but can develop into a fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. In addition to being fun, the game has developed a reputation for its friendly and social nature.

Pickleball is played by all ages. It is a popular sport in schools and senior centers. The smaller court size and inter-generational appeal makes it perfect for backyard courts. It has great health and fitness benefits for all. It is also becoming popular with persons with disabilities.

The 1st Annual Mid-South Regional Pickleball Tournament was held in 2009 and attracted over 100 participants from six states. This year’s tournament will have over 130 participants (ages 14-80) from five states. The participants include medalists (Youth & Adult divisions) from the USAPA national tournament, NSGA national tournament (seniors), and state SOG champions from Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington. The event includes singles, doubles, and mixed doubles and will be in a double elimination format.

The production of this event is a joint effort by the Baton Rouge Area Sports Foundation, the Louisiana Senior Olympic Games, USA Pickleball Association, and BREC (East Baton Rouge Parish Park & Recreation Commission and is presented as a part of the 2010 Louisiana Governor’s Games. The tournament is also a featured tournament during International Pickleball Week – June 1st – 7th.
