The Right Side of Learning, a Manhattan Beach, CA based tutoring and learning products company, recently launched a pilot program in Lawndale, CA to help Kindergarten teachers more effectively help their ESL learners meet the State Standards in Reading.

Headed by Melanie West and Suzanne Kisly Coburn, The Right Side of Learning teamed up with Lawndale Kindergarten teachers to adapt their commercially successful PictureFirst Learning sight word program to be used in the classroom.

“We’ve worked with hundreds of students and have seen that whether English is a student’s first or second language, stopping the practice of tore memorization of the sight words is essential to learning effective reading and comprehension skills,” said Melanie West. “We’ve observed that most first graders do not truly understand the sight words. This causes weaknesses in reading comprehension, poor English speaking skills, and weak writing skills at higher grade levels.”

“This pilot program came about when a number of teachers came to us asking for a simpler way to teach sight words,” said Suzanne Kisly Coburn. “The sight words are traditionally taught through rote memorization, but the teachers are finding this extremely ineffective.”

Designed by Melanie West and Suzanne Kisly Coburn, the PictureFirst Learning program has primarily been used by parents to teach their children the sight words and strengthen their reading skills. However, both Melanie and Suzanne knew they could help even more students by integrating it into a classroom. This was the first time the PictureFirst Learning program has been used in a classroom, yet the results are proving very positive.

Requiring only 15 minutes twice a week, the program is easily integrated into the teacher’s current curriculum.

Ilene Ziff, a kindergarten teacher who took part in the pilot program, had this to say: "Finally, a meaningful way to teach sight words that is interactive, fun and effective. PictureFirst works for kids. Thank you for this valuable teaching resource."

“It’s amazing walking into a classroom full of kids and seeing them using the program we created,” said Melanie. “We’re helping them learn, and they’re doing it with smiles.”
