Planet Fitness Albany, N.Y.

To be opening the 400th Planet Fitness club just speaks to the success of the company and the strength of our brand. People love our gyms. - Dave Leon, Planet Fitness Albany, N.Y.

Planet Fitness, the gym franchise known for its Judgement Free Zone® atmosphere and friendly prices, opened its 400th location today.

The milestone was reached in Albany, N.Y., where franchisee Dave Leon celebrated the launch of his gleaming 18,000-square-foot gym at with a Grand Opening special: memberships for just $1 down and then $10 a month.

“I’m honored to be a part of Planet Fitness and of this revolution that’s changed the fitness industry,” said Leon, who opened his first Planet Fitness location in 2004 and now owns or co-owns 13 gyms from Albany to Buffalo. “To be opening the 400th Planet Fitness club just speaks to the success of the company and the strength of our brand. People love our gyms.”

Brothers Michael and Marc Grondahl launched the first Planet Fitness in 1992 in Dover, N.H. In 2003 they had just four locations when Chris Rondeau joined the Grondahls as a partner and the company began franchising.

Today Planet Fitness has a national footprint – 2.5 million members in 40 states, more than 1,500 units sold in the United States and Puerto Rico, and an ad campaign heard and seen nationally on the “Imus in the Morning” radio show and on Fox Business Channel.

Ranked as one of the fastest-growing private businesses in America by Inc. magazine for three straight years, Planet Fitness is on track to become the largest health club operator in the country in 2012. In the $19 billion North American fitness industry, Planet Fitness has opened eyes by turning an extremely low-price model into the segment’s most profitable concept.

Prices at Planet Fitness are always extremely low. Besides the unbeatable value, Planet Fitness stands apart from other health clubs by providing a relaxed, non-intimidating atmosphere, and by offering free fitness instruction to all members.

In addition to the $10-a-month membership, Planet Fitness also has the PF Black Card® membership, which costs $19.99 a month and comes with free and unlimited tanning, free guest privileges, free use of massage chairs, 50 percent off all cooler drinks, and free use of all clubs in the Planet Fitness chain.
