On recent episodes of Planet Love Match Radio®, life coach Steve Truitt, relationship expert Lorna O., and real-life couple Stephen “tWitch” Boss and Allison Holker talked about how learning the art of good communication can actually lead to positive resolutions of heated arguments. Discussing fighting style, effectively listening, and getting to the bottom of what’s really causing the fight are all key components of a healthy and constructive argument.
Relationship coach Lorna O. believes that sometimes having a discussion about personal fighting style can help when an actual dispute occurs. “You know you’re going to get into fights – it’s going to happen. Sometimes it’s about understanding how the both of you fight so that when you get into an argument you can go to the mature place first,” she asserts.
Lorna O., a native of St. Croix U.S. Virgin Islands, is a producer and host of the popular international dating and relationship talk show Yin N Yang. Happily married, Lorna utilizes a Solution-Focused Therapy style to help clients take steps to attain their desired goals.
Agreeing with Lorna O., real-life celebrity couple Stephen “tWitch” Boss and Allison Holker from So You Think You Can Dance have taken the time to learn how their communication styles differ. tWitch says, “Allison is a verbal communicator and I am more of a listener; a silent communicator. I’m very internal.”
“We always talk everything out. [tWitch] has been making a huge effort to make sure he tells me how he feels. It’s very hard for him,” Allison reveals.
Life coach Steve Truitt believes tWitch’s fighting style is the key to positive conflict resolution. “The best conversation [starts with] always listening,” says Truitt. “If you’re a good listener, you’re going to have a great conversation.”
In an intense discussion, it’s possible to lose sight of the root of the argument and meander into pent-up resentment. Focusing on resolving the issue at hand and not going after each other can spare unnecessary hurt feelings. “Women take time because we can’t articulate everything we’re feeling at the drop of a penny, so sometimes we back off and get quiet and we don’t know what to say,” Lorna O. says.
tWitch agrees with Lorna O., since he often struggles to find the right words in the heat of the moment. “It’s nice to take some time and think about what you’re going to say instead of just blurting out something on impulse,” he states. “If you happen to say something and it comes out the wrong way, you can’t take it back. It’s finding the medium between keeping it internal and working it out.”
Humans are ingrained with a need to fight to win. Sometimes winning the argument can be more important than reaching an amicable conclusion – leading to relationship damage. “People love to be right. Therefore, in a fight, we’re going to fight to the death to prove that we’re right,” Truitt states.
Steve Truitt is a certified practitioner of Hypnotherapy, Neuro-linguistic Programming, and Timeline Therapy™. An award-winning author, addiction specialist and life coach, Truitt’s new book “Stop Waiting for Permission!” received the 2010 Walsh Foundation Best Personal Growth Book of the Year.
Committed partners need to comprehend where the other person is coming from in order to resolve differences. Truitt concludes that, “The last thing you’re going to be doing [in a fight to the death] is listening to the other person’s perspective. But that’s where you find yourself.” Fighting to prove you are right at the detriment of finding a real solution could cost you your relationship.
