Playa del Carmen, Mexico (PRWEB) December 14, 2009
For over 30 years one of the most popular "cabana resorts" on the Yucatan has been Shangri La Caribe in Playa del Carmen. In the old days it was a couple of miles from the center of town which it is virtually consumed by now. Thankfully for long time visitors and new guests to the resort, they have always remained true to their cabana resort roots with an emphasis on service. It's probably the biggest reason they have sustained their popularity over the years. They are a unique property and what some call a magical experience amongst larger hotels and luxury condos.
The name change was precipitated by the sale of the property which was finalized earlier this year. Originally the new ownership group had planned to tear down the resort and build luxury condos, but do in part to the resorts immense popularity they have decided to continue with the management of the resort and have made a number of improvements already.
Speaking with general manager Emilio Palazuelos, many past guests that have visited the resort year after year have had a common thread or thought of a "magical" place, this was the spark for the new name Mahekal, a Mayan inspired word for magical.
The Mahekal Beach Resort will continue to operate the hotel with the same policies and programs as the old Shangri La Caribe resort. The same look and feel will continue with a few needed upgrades. Shangri la Caribe has always been a magical place to visit and will continue to be just that. "We have a wonderful facility here and have done some remodeling to one of our dining areas on the Adventura side that really opens things up and adds to the already spectacular atmosphere of the property" Palazuelos continued, "we have also discounted our room rates and wedding packages by almost 30%, we want people to see this and feel confident in our commitment, it's an excellent option to have a wedding and honeymoon all in paradise".
The Turquoise Reef Group (http://www.mexicoholiday.com) who has been the long standing US central reservations and marketing partner with Shangri La Caribe will continue their relationship with the new Mahekal Beach Resort offering high level personal reservation services along with wedding and group planning. Chuck Ball, the owner of Turquoise Reef Group stated that "Mahekal Beach Resort is still one of our key properties and we are pleased with the commitment of the new ownership to maintaining and improving upon an already exceptional vacation experience".
Mahekal Beach Resort has also added new hammocks, a fresh coat of paint and a number of other landscaping improvements to the property that guests are sure to appreciate.
