“The first task when gluing CPVC is to pick a glue”, according to Bob Beall, the most referred plumber in the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and Youngstown Ohio areas. Mr. Rooter Plumbing, both Pittsburgh and Youngstown offers free daily tips from the Mr. Rooter Media Center. “The consumer has two choices–orange glue or gold glue,” says Beall.
Mr. Rooter’s Tip of the Day: Gluing CPVC pipe
There is essentially no difference in the performance of either type, but the gold glue will save you a little time. “It doesn’t require a primer,” says Beall, “the orange glue does.”
If the decision is made to use the gold glue:
Tip #1 Apply the glue to both sides inside the fitting hub and on the outer surface of the pipe end.
Tip #2 Though the entire surface of the hub and pipe end needs to be coated, don’t over-apply the glue. Typically, a professional plumber will go around both the fitting and the pipe twice and, on the third time, will wipe away the excess with the dauber.
Tip #3 Immediately after you apply the glue, slip the fitting onto the pipe, or vice-versa. A professional plumber will slip the fitting on slightly out of alignment and then turn either the fitting or the pipe into proper alignment. This spreads the glue evenly around the joint.
Tip #4 Don’t rush, but don’t waste any time, either. These glues set up quickly.
If the decision is made to use the orange glue (with primer):
Tip #1 Apply the primer, (it’s purple) with essentially the same application techniques to coat the surfaces.
Tip #2 The primer dulls the plastic and gives the glue a “tooth” for better adhesion.
Tip #3 Apply the glue, again, with the same application procedure as above.
BONUS TIP: What can go wrong?
Too much CPVC glue may form a dam inside the pipe or fitting once they’re assembled. To avoid the excess, rake the dauber off in the can, leaving just enough glue on it to put a thin coat on both the fitting and the pipe.
