Plumbworld, revealed to us today that their Google AdWords spend since launch has topped £2.7 Million.

Google Adwords offers pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, and site-targeted advertising for both text and banner ads. The AdWords program includes local, national, and international distribution. Google AdWords text advertisements are short, consisting of one title line and two content text lines, meaning that advertisers like Plumbworld have little time and space to catch the eye of a customer.

Plumbworld started selling bathroom products and bathroom suites online in 1999 as a home business founded by James Hickman.

The business was an early adopter of Google's AdWords system and has used it to drive customers to their website almost since the system was first launched by Google in 2000. The basics of the system are that advertisers specify the words that should trigger their ads and the maximum amount they are willing to pay per click. When a user searches Google’s search engine, ads for relevant keywords are shown as ‘sponsored links’ on the right side of the screen and sometimes above the main search results.

Scott Morris, E-Commerce Manager of Plumbworld Said:

"We have been working with the Adwords system from the early days and I have managed the AdWords account along with the Managing Director and founder James Hickman. There are plenty of consultants out there who claim to be AdWords specialists, but when you ask them some detailed questions a lot of them don't really know much more than the basics. I consider myself something of an Adwords expert and we have been increasing our click through rates and return on investment consistently over the years by experimenting with new techniques and testing everything. AdWords is a never-ending task as there is always something you can change to make the account perform better, changing ad-texts, negative keyword additions, landing page alterations and keyword bid changing to name a few!"

The Plumbworld Lifetime Statistics with Google Adwords are as follows:
Total Impressions: - 275 Million
Total Clicks:-13.3 Million
Total Spend: - £2.7 Million
CTR: - 4.84%
Average Cost Per Click £0.20

James Hickman, Managing Director of Plumbworld Added:

"It was only when I checked our total spend with Google the other day that I realised our Adwords education had cost over £2.7 Million. It does sound like a lot of money, but actually I think it's been a bargain! During that time the bathroom business has grown from a first year turnover of under £100,000 to last years turnover of £18Million. Over the years the cost per click has gradually increased, but to be honest so has the cost of everything in the world. At the moment we are trialling some new content advertising on the Google Search Network, which at the moment appears to be giving good returns”

Highest clicked categories for Plumbworld this year have been Showers and Shower Enclosures, showing a growing market in those areas, an increase from 2008 by almost 25%, followed very closely by the Kitchen Sink Adgroups.

Plumbworld is based in Evesham, Worcestershire and now employs 50 staff within their 2,000 sqm, purpose built warehouse and offices. The company had a turnover in 2008 in excess of £18 Million. Plumbworld was established in 1999 by James and Anita Hickman who sold the business to The Grafton Group Plc in December 2006.
