Sebastião Salgado Chinstrap Penguins, Deception Island, Antarctica, 2005 Gelatin silver print 20 x 14 in. (50.8 x 35.6 cm.) Est. US$13,000–15,000

artnet Auctions is pleased to announce Point of Departure, a photography sale that captures frontiers near and far. The sale features sublime landscapes by Edward Burtynsky, Richard Misrach, and Michael Reisch, classic works of global photojournalism by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Steve McCurry, and stunning portraits of animals by Peter Beard and Sebastião Salgado. Point of Departure presents our photographic engagement with our planet, from the well-traveled to the pristine and the exotic.

The sale features works by Sebastião Salgado including Chinstrap Penguins, Deception Island, Antarctica (2005) from his Genesis series, estimated at US$13,000 to 15,000. This photograph depicts penguins gathering in procession in Antarctica. The work captures the beauty and majesty of nature that is still pristine. Though we see no human figure, the photograph alludes to human presence through its representation of the melting of the glaciers. Salgado’s hope is to inspire preservation action through his work.

Another highlight of this sale is Michael Reisch’s Landschaft, 7/021 (2009). With an 18th-century interest in the grandeur of the “Sublime” as it is found in nature, Reisch creates landscapes of an awe-inspiring scale. The artist titles his work ambiguously, perhaps so that these wildernesses, which lack any trace of mankind, can better exist in our imaginations as distant places far from the reach of civilization. This work is estimated at US$15,000 to 25,000.

Point of Departure will be live on artnet Auctions from June 13 through 20, 2013, and on view here.
