Polyonics Introduces High Performance Engineered Tapes that Protect Components from Harsh Environments

Polyonics has introduced a family of durable, high performance and chemically resistant engineered tapes that remain dimensionally stable at ultra-high temperatures, act as flame retardants and protect against ESD (electrostatic discharges). The tapes include unique performance-specific coatings, nano-composite adhesives and liners to allow die cutting.

These new tapes utilize the same technology that has brought Polyonics worldwide success in their label business. Polyonics label materials are used by converters and OEMs worldwide to ID and track key components and products as they move through harsh manufacturing environments and through their product lives.

High Temperature Tapes Help Isolate and Protect Components

Polyonics understands the chemistry behind the thermal degradation of polymeric materials. Polyonics also understands how to engineer tapes so they remain dimensionally stable and continue to provide superior performance at ultra-high temperatures (see dimensional stability diagram) and in the presence of chemicals typically found in manufacturing. These new high temperature tapes offer manufacturers robust protective solutions where traditional tapes fail.

High-temperature tapes are specifically engineered using ThermoGard™ technology to isolate sensitive, precise and expensive components and products from extreme temperatures (up to 500°C) and harsh environments. The polyimide, polyester and aluminum tapes are available in different thicknesses with a variety of acrylic and silicone adhesives to meet a wide range of complex applications.

Static Dissipative Tapes and Films Help Eliminate ESD

Polyonics ESD HardCoat™ tapes and films are designed using durable, cross-linked coatings to dissipate static charges in a safe manner so the charges don’t build up and damage components and products (see ESD video). Using TriboGard™ technologies, the tapes offer a surface resistance of 10^5 to 10^9 ohms (see surface resistance diagram)—ideal for eliminating charges associated with both the human body (HBM) and charged device (CDM) models—and help protect components, products and operators. In addition, the cross-linked dissipative coating provides a high level of abrasion and chemical resistance.

The potential for damage from electrostatic discharges depends on charge density and how charges are handled by the surfaces they reside on (see charge density diagram). Spots of charge (high charge densities) persist on insulative surfaces for long periods of time with little or no charge dissipation, plus damaging static discharges can occur from insulative surfaces. Conductive surfaces dissipate electrostatic charges rapidly, which can cause electrical shorts and expose electrical components and devices to higher than expected voltages.

The dissipative surfaces of the Polyonics ESD HardCoat tapes and films do not allow charge densities to build-up and safely dissipate them over their full surface area greatly reducing the risk of discharge and potential damage.

Flame Retardant Tapes Protect Your Product’s Future

The risk of fire in electronic, electrical and electromechanical devices (batteries, power supplies, motors, etc.) is real and not going away. In fact, the risk is rapidly escalating due to the need for more power and smaller devices. Designing with materials that do not propagate fire such as flame retardant tapes and labels effectively addresses this need.

Polyonics flame retardant tapes help effectively prevent the propagation of fire. The tapes use FlameGard™ technologies that include advanced resins, polymers and nano-composites to increase the dimensional stability of the tapes and create a unique char layer (see combustion diagram) that acts as a heat shield to:

  • Lower temperature
  • Remove oxygen
  • Reduce concentration of flammable gasses
  • Slow rate of thermal oxidation
  • Minimize thermal degradation
  • Prevent propagation of fire

The flame retardant tapes are also halogen-free and tested to the UL94, FAR 25.853 (flammability) and BSS 7238/7239 (smoke and toxicity) standards.
