MET Technician Ryszard Kozakiewicz recently completed Hybrid Vehicle Technology (HVT) training for Porsche vehicles at Poole Accident Repair, the Porsche Centre Approved Body Repairer for Porsche Centre Bournemouth and Porsche Centre Portsmouth.

This is a significant milestone for Poole Accident Repair and Porsche hybrid owners because although hybrids often have better fuel economy than other vehicles, they also present some unique hazards when it comes to repairing them.

They house a high-voltage battery pack and multiple cables capable of delivering enough current to cause fatality during repairs. Furthermore, a power saving function sometimes suggests that the hybrid engine is off when in fact it is just ‘sleeping’, so it is imperative that hybrid owners get their vehicles repaired only by officially qualified technicians.

It’s vital that technicians have the appropriate education and training to identify a hybrid's key electrical components. Even then, the technician should always consult the manufacturer's service manual, as each hybrid model is slightly different.

This is why Poole Accident Repair’s Ryszard Kozakiewicz was trained on Porsche hybrids at Porsche GB Headquarters in Reading. Ryszard completed an intense course over a period of more than 20 days, and he is now one of only a few hybrid specialists in the whole of the UK Accident Repair industry.

Ryszard said: “Hybrids are not dangerous if you treat them with respect, are aware of the potential shock hazard, and follow the recommended safety procedures when working on them. The key to safe and successful hybrid repairs is to check the hybrid system is operating correctly before beginning to repair the body damage.”

Hybrids are becoming ever more popular in the UK, with petrol-electric hybrids such as the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid and the Porsche Panamera S Hybrid significantly increasing overall fuel efficiency with automatic stop/start, brake energy recuperation and advanced clutch arrangements.
