New York, New York (PRWEB) May 19, 2013
The Pradaxa lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP note that a Case Management Conference was recently convened for hundreds of Pradaxa bleeding lawsuits pending in a federal multidistrict litigation now underway in U.S. District Court, Southern District of Illinois. According to Minutes posted on the Court’s website on May 14th, the Conference addressed the status of depositions and pending motions. It was also reported during the Conference that Defendants submitted a list of early trial eligible cases to the Court and Plaintiffs’ co-lead counsel last month, and that the parties have revised and finalized the list. “We are pleased to see the federal Pradaxa litigation moving forward. The Firm’s Pradaxa lawyers are currently offering free legal evaluations to alleged victims of Pradaxa bleeding.
Pradaxa Side Effect Lawsuits
Court records indicate that 711 Pradaxa lawsuits are currently pending in the Southern District of Illinois. All of the lawsuits allege Boehringer Ingelheim failed to adequately warn that there is no readily-available antidote for Pradaxa bleeding. The first trial in the litigation is scheduled to start in September 2014.
Pradaxa was approved for sale by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2010 to prevent strokes in people with atrial fibrillation, and was supposed to provide an improved alternative to warfarin. But according to a report published by Bloomberg.com in December, regulators in several countries have issued Pradaxa bleeding alerts since the drug’s launch. One real danger is the fact that there exists no readily-available antidote for internal bleeding, a potentially life-threatening Pradaxa side effect. *
On May 1st, the Journal of Neurosurgery published a study that showed head trauma victims were more likely to die from brain bleeding if they had been using Pradaxa compared to those taking warfarin. The authors of the research said that the absence of an effective reversal agent could account for the higher death rate among Pradaxa patients.** In January, an analysis of FDA hemorrhage cases published in the Institute for Safe Medication Practice’s QuarterWatch report revealed Pradaxa bleeding was 5 times more likely to have a fatal outcome compared to warfarin bleeding.***
Victims of serious Pradaxa side effects may be eligible to collect compensation for their medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering and more.
