The Pradaxa lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP note that the judge overseeing hundreds of Pradaxa lawsuits in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Illinois, has issued a new Order regarding the production of files associated with certain Boehringer Ingelheim, Inc. employees. Specifically, the April 26th Order directs the company to disclose employee reviews and bonuses related to Pradaxa for company witnesses who played a role in the development, approval or marketing of the blood thinner. “We are pleased to see that the company will be required to produce these type of materials, which are directly relevant to many of plaintiffs’ claims concerning the improper marketing of Pradaxa,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm’s Pradaxa lawyers are currently offering free legal evaluations to alleged victims of Pradaxa internal bleeding.

Pradaxa Side Effects
Pradaxa was approved for sale by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2010 to prevent strokes in people with a heart-rhythm disorder known as atrial fibrillation. According to, regulators in several countries have issued Pradaxa side effect alerts since the drug was first brought to market. In 2011 alone, the FDA received reports of 542 deaths and 3,781 side-effect incidents tied to Pradaxa, Bloomberg said.*

Unlike warfarin, the decades-old blood thinner Pradaxa was supposed to replace, there exists no readily-available antidote for the internal bleeding that can sometimes occur in patients treated with the drug. While dialysis can be used to remove Pradaxa from the blood stream a study published last May in the Journal of Neurosurgery found this treatment is risky and may not be administered in enough time to stop this dangerous Pradaxa side effect.*** Concerns about Pradaxa bleeding were renewed earlier this year, when the Institute for Safe Medication Practices revealed that an analysis of hemorrhage cases reported to the FDA during the second quarter of 2012 found that Pradaxa bleeding is 5 times more likely to result in death compared to warfarin bleeding.****

Court records indicate that 531 Pradaxa lawsuits are now pending in the litigation underway in Illinois. Among other things, allegations in the lawsuits accuse Boehringer Ingelheim of selling Pradaxa despite knowing it could cause fatal bleeding in some patients, and of failing to adequately warn that there was no readily-available antidote for this Pradaxa side effect. According to court documents, the first trials in the Pradaxa litigation are scheduled to begin in September 2014.

Victims of serious Pradaxa side effects may be eligible to collect compensation for their medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering and more. Additional information is available at Bernstein Liebhard LLP’s website, or by calling 1-877-779-1414 to speak with a Pradaxa lawyer today.
