Mike Lewis Attorneys, a product liability firm in Tennessee, is reviewing and investigating the impact of Boehringer Ingelheim’s $650 million settlement offer. If successful, the offer would settle more than 4,000 pending Pradaxa claims in the United States.

In a statement released on May 28, 2014, Boehringer announced that it would settle all of the pending 4,000 Pradaxa claims in the U.S. Though the offer has been made, claimants in the U.S. and their attorneys have not yet accepted the German drugmaker's settlement offer.

Pradaxa, according to a May 28 report issued by Reuters, belongs to a class of drugs that replaced blood thinners such as Warfarin. Such medications reduce the incidences of strokes in patients with blood clots.

Also on May 28, a report by Bloomberg discussing the settlement notes that Pradaxa has been on the market for four years and that litigation around the drug has involved claims of bleeding complications, injuries and fatalities. Boehringer is accused have knowingly suppressing clinical trials that may have demonstrated that the drug could cause patients to bleed excessively.

Plaintiffs are also claiming that the company failed to take proper measures to warn of potential dangers. In 2011, the Bloomberg report notes, 542 patients using Pradaxa died. Documents revealed during litigation suggest that the company may have omitted evidence which would have revealed an additional 22 cases of bleeding complications related to the use of Pradaxa.

The settlement offer is not an indication that the German drug maker believes Pradaxa to be dangerous. Indeed, the drugmaker took pains to reassert the drug’s safety. In the statement released by Boehringer, the company suggested that it was motivated by the potential costs of litigation. The company may also have been motivated by the uncertain outcomes in the civil trials.
