It’s rare when someone completely redefines an instrument’s capabilities and a genre of music. It’s even rarer to have an opportunity to interview that musical legend. But that is exactly what Patrick Strother, CEO and chief creative officer of Strother Communications Group (SCG), did when he interviewed world renowned guitarist, Preston Reed.

Reed originally hails from Armonk, N.Y., but currently resides in Scotland. A one-time resident of South Minneapolis, Minn., Reed taught Strother guitar lessons out of his home in the early 1990’s. Widely thought of as “the world’s most gifted guitarist,” according to Total Guitar, Reed’s musical career spans decades and includes gigs with Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt. His impressive creative output includes 15 (and counting) studio albums.

Strother’s two-part interview delves into Reed’s unique playing style and technique which integrates percussion with guitar. In the interview, Reed also discusses his approach to composing and creative process, and recounts his first encounters with a guitar, his musical influences and the best advice he’s ever received. “Preston’s experiences and abilities with the guitar are so extraordinary,” said Strother. “The lessons and insights he shares about creativity, practice and dedication through his musical journey are universal.
