There are many reputable companies in this industry that provide automated employment verification services, without selling the employee's data on the back end

The employment and income verification industry has come under fire for privacy concerns in recent weeks. In a letter dated February 6, 2013 and signed by seven members of Congress, Rep. Jackie Speier questions the legality of "using consumers' sensitive personal information for profit." The letter cites specific examples of data selling to debt collectors, financial service companies, and student loan issuers by a large verification provider.
According to Jon Socolof, President of employment verification company VerifyX, selling employee data is not standard practice for the majority of companies in the industry. "There are many reputable companies in this industry that provide automated employment verification services, without selling the employee's data on the back end," says Socolof. "The employee's data belongs to the employee. We’re only here to service their needs and have no right to sell their private information otherwise.
Socolof has been an outspoken advocate of employee data privacy since starting VerifyX. As early as 2008, he was voicing the same privacy concerns outlined in the 2013 letter from Rep. Speier.
Employees that are concerned about the privacy of their information should talk with their Human Resources department about the verification process, their service provider, how the provider handles employee information and exactly who is given access.
With most providers, the service works exactly as the employer intends. Employees can share their data on their terms, employers are relieved of this time-consuming manual task, and everyone benefits.
