Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 21, 2015
Proa Medical, Inc., developer of innovative and practical medical devices for women’s health, today announced that it has been granted a United States patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The patent covers the company’s first product, the Brella Vaginal Retractor.
The Brella Vaginal Retractor is a single-use device with a built-in light source designed to provide optimal visualization and access during vaginal or perineal wound repair. Repair of vaginal and perineal lacerations secondary to childbirth, required in approximately half of all deliveries, is among the most frequently performed surgical procedures worldwide. The Brella Vaginal Retractor is used in hospitals’ labor and delivery departments for hands-free retraction and deep illumination. The sterile device features a unique canopy design incorporating a bright, deep light source, providing a clear and unobstructed view of the vaginal walls and surrounding structures.
Additionally, current development of a patent-pending speculum version of the device was prompted by numerous physicians’ requests to use the Brella during high-volume procedures in their offices and clinics.
Proa Medical has in-house expertise in patent filing and intellectual property management. At present, Proa Medical’s intellectual property portfolio includes two issued US patents, as well as 19 additional patent applications pending in various countries throughout the world. The company is also assessing additional medical device concepts from outside of AMI-USC. These products will enable Proa to offer a comprehensive and unique women’s health medical device catalog to distributors worldwide.
Patent US 9,050,048, “Minimally obstructive retractor,” was issued to the Alfred Mann Institute for Biomedical Engineering on June 9, 2015, with Proa Medical’s CTO/COO Afshin Nadershahi, MD, MBA, named as the lead inventor. Proa Medical has obtained a broad license to this and several other medical device inventions from the Alfred E. Mann Institute for Biomedical Engineering at the University of Southern California (AMI-USC), with the fully-paid option to outright own the intellectual property.
“Proa Medical is committed to continuously serving patients and physicians by providing innovative products to improve the efficiency, safety, and efficacy of frequently-performed procedures,” said Arman Nadershahi, Chief Executive Officer of Proa Medical and a registered patent attorney. “Proa Medical serves as a channel to help physician-inventors rapidly develop and commercialize their innovative, relatively quick-to-market, ideas in order to enhance clinical practice.”
