Author and professor Chung Boon Kuan shares ancient wisdom with readers in search of an alternative to modern tenets in his comprehensive new nonfiction, “Lao Zi Philosophy of Liberal Government” (published by Trafford Publishing).

Kuan looks to the original ideas outlined in “Tao Te Jing,” an ancient Chinese philosophical text that dates back to 500 BC. The famous work advocates minimizing the role of government and asserts that upholding liberty is the highest political end.

Throughout the book, Kuan comments on how current issues, historical events, economic policies and wars relate to the various verses in “Tao Te Jing.” He places special emphasis on what he calls “the need to free our minds from decades of indoctrination to the state.” Doing so, he asserts, will reveal the correct ways to govern the country, social organizations, family and more.

“The philosophy of Lao Zi is timeless because it advocates learning from and harmonizing with the Great Nature which has proven to us what are the correct ways through its deeds and longevity,” Kuan writes. “This book translates ‘Tao Te Jing’ in a reader friendly style and is supplemented with many real-life examples to demonstrate the aptness of Taoist teachings in modern context.”
