The Bill of Material Manager, developed by Progressive Edge, is designed to relieve your Made2Manage users of the menial tasks which accompany Bill of Material (BOM) management. There are a number of enhancements over the standard Made2Manage product. First of all, you can work will all of the Made2Manage BOM Types (Standard, Job, Order, and Quote) all from the same intuitive interface. Second, the Bill of Material Manager supports an “Integrated Routing”, so you see the Routing indented right along with the BOM information. Third, BOM Maintenance is performed via an Excel-like interface, with Drag and Drop capabilities to “pull” sections (including the routings) from any other BOM in the system. Finally, an Import capability allows you to create new BOM’s from any CSV type file, without typing.
Stephen Martin, the Engineering Manager at PSI, explains that two features in particular have contributed to the productivity gains. “The Importer Module allows us to import a large number of sequences without having to type each one separately. And because it imports from a CSV file, we can leverage this capability across our three CAD packages (Microvellum, Mechanical Desktop and Inventor).” All major CAD packages, including Solidworks and Inventor, support exporting to CSV files. The Bill of Material Manager comes with an Import Wizard which walks you through the process of importing that CSV file into the BOM Manager; a very simple process.
The ability to import BOMs into Made2Manage is a big deal in itself, but the Bill of Material Manager also assists in managing the BOMs once they are already in your system. Stephan continues, “The Where Used capability has also made us more productive. It allows for the specification of more than one different component at time, so that a list of parents which use both components (or optionally only one of the components) can be displayed. This allows us to quickly see patterns in material usage. For instance, I could quickly find out which other right ends might be used with a selected left end.”
