Faith-based television is getting a makeover if Steve and Kathy Gray have anything to say abut it. This fall, the expanded cast of The Steve and Kathy Show starts its new season September 14th with 4 Emmy® nominations and over 50 Telly awards under its belt.
Created by executive producer and host, Steve Gray, The Steve & Kathy Show is a one of a kind Christian TV show that pushes the boundaries of what is typically considered "Christian" television. Gray recently introduced a new format to his award winning show, adding a new cast, an expanded Steve & Kathy Show Band, and a new batch of hilarious original skits.
Making use of a "Saturday Night Live" style of humor and a late-night show format, the new episodes of The Steve & Kathy Show spoof what Gray calls "my absurd religion." Gray states, "People want more than the traditional message that only deals with what happens when you die. They want to know how to live! And that's what we're here to do with this show, by putting Americans in touch with a 'now' God!" Using comedy and satire to expose the hypocrisies of religion in America, Gray hopes to give the viewing public a "religion that works" and a show that makes them laugh.
Local Kansas City talent comes alongside Gray and his wife and co-host, Kathy, for the creative humor of the The Steve & Kathy Show. Production of this Kansas City-based TV show is a community effort involving over 100 cast and crew, many of whom are volunteers.
The creative process of Gray and his production team is definitely producing a show that is non-stop funny. The upcoming season introduces hilarious new characters, including "The Trailer Park Pastor" who serves up a unique style of wisdom for his trailer park congregants with hilarious results and the "Sandbox Kids" who open the door to topics that adults can't touch - but kids on the playground can. "My mommy says she is fat. She wants to know if Daddy thinks she is fat, too," comments one kid to another. The innocent responder says it all, "My daddy says all men need to know how to answer the fat question."
The Christian Coffeehouse skit presents a humorous spin to the subject of Christian dating. Eyeing a girl at another table, Guy 1 says, "So... here's the plan. I will pretend to be your lost-and-bound-for-hell friend and you go ask her how to get me saved." Guy 2: "Hey, great idea!" Guy 2: "Works every time..."
Leading the way in creative Christian television programming, these hilarious skits are complemented by inspiring stories of people whose lives have been dramatically changed by God's presence through the Gray's ministry. One of these inspiring stories was recently nominated for an Emmy® award in the Human Interest Category, a highly competitive playing field for the Emmy® awards, and a good indicator of the quality of this unique Christian TV show.
Bringing a fresh approach to Christianity and television, The Steve & Kathy Show proves to be something America will want to watch. "This isn't like my grandma's Christian TV show," states one of the new cast members of the show. "This is something new and fresh... something first-time viewers will look at and think 'maybe I ought to see WHAT THIS IS!'"
