Houston, TX (PRWEB) January 31, 2011
According to the Center for Disease Control, Texas’ obesity rate in 2009 was a shocking 28.7%. With all we know about the effects of obesity, such as cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer and type II diabetes, it’s time to begin new strategies for eating.
RedCircle’s Registered Dietitian Susan Spiering says many people vow to eat healthier but inevitably fail on fad diets promising fast weight loss.
“When approaching weight loss, we should think of the long term health benefits,” says Spiering, “Looking good in your jeans is one thing but enhancing your quality of life is another.”
“It’s important to remember the advice mom told us growing up to eat more fruits and vegetables,” says Spiering, “They’ll fill you up without filling you out.”
Sugar is another highly debated diet-killer. According to the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, sugar “intake remains substantially higher than they were four decades ago” and “considerably higher than current recommendations across all ages and sex groups.” The Journal concludes that nobody, except the extremely physically active, has room for hundreds of empty calories from sugar.
The biggest culprits of added sugars are carbonated beverages, energy and sports drinks, and fruit drinks. “Sweet food cravings often stem from uncontrolled blood sugar,” Spiering said, “It’s important to avoid a diet rich in refined carbohydrates (white sugar, white flour, white rice) and substitute with foods rich in fiber (whole grains, whole fruits). Higher fibers food are digested slower which help control your blood sugar, keeping cravings at bay.”
Spiering suggests, “A stick of sugar free gum can also distract you until you get to your next meal.”
