Cassie, a three year-old Spaniel mix, was chewing & gnawing, destroying doors, walls, carpeting, & furniture in her home. Tucky, a one year-old Shih Tzu, was peeing all over the place & growling at visitors. Nothing their families did seemed to work. Letting go of the dog appeared to be their only option. That is, until animal behavior consultant Lynn Hoover came to the rescue. These dogs & their families---& many others like them---are now living companionably thanks to their work with Hoover. Like a growing number of dog behavior consultants, Hoover’s mission is to reduce the number of dogs that are inappropriately punished, discarded & euthanized for behavior problems that are resolvable.

To help families who want to better understand their dog’s emotional & relationship needs, & families unable to find, or afford, someone like Hoover, she shares her tips & wisdom in a new book, Dog Quirks & Behavior Solutions.

The first thing Hoover wants families with dogs to understand that behavior has diverse causes & is held in place by multiple reinforcers. Families need to develop a coordinated plan to get at problems from many angles. The biggest mistake families make is to go one by one through their “try this!” list until they’ve exhausted all the possibilities that might have worked if they’d been introduced as part of a coordinated plan.

After explaining some basic theories, relationship & professional issues, Hoover offers specific case solutions in an entertaining, yet informative way. Other issues such as dominance, medicating behavior & stress are also covered. If dog owners take away only one bit of advice, Hoover hopes it is, "Dogs aren’t that complicated. They can be wooed, they can be won over."

Lynn Hoover is an expert in dog behavior problems & family relationships, interviewing & systems consulting—& a leading authority on the profession of dog behavior consulting. She founded the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) & founded & served as President & Chair of their Dog division for four years. She is a long-time advocate for meaningful certification.

Hoover a medical family therapist with long-standing eligibility for Clinical membership in the American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy (AAMFT). She has a private behavior consulting practice in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

PRAISE FOR: DOG QUIRKS & BEHAVIOR SOLUTIONS

“Lynn Hoover's insights & her recommendations for managing canine behaviors are based squarely on scientific research, loving observation, & a joyful appreciation of dogs & the bonds between our two species. If you want to live happily ever after with your dog, read Dog Quirks."
~ Sheila Webster Boneham, Ph.D., author of Rescue Matters! & Training Your Dog for Life

“I really like Lynn Hoover’s approach & common sense ideas in this book, & her use of case studies to make her points. I think readers will get a lot out of seeing examples of the points she is making about real-life situations…Lynn really gets to the heart of recognizing behavior problems as miscommunication between the species…”

“Lots of practical advice & methods for solving dog behavior problems. This book is especially recommended for people who work with dog behavior problems that are caused by either separation anxiety or fear.”

~ Temple Grandin, Ph.D., author of Animals in Translation, & Animals Make us Human. Time Magazine, Listed in Time Magazine’s, "The 2010 Time 100---The People Who Most Affect Our World"

“Dog Quirks and Behavior Solutions is a great book to own wherever you fall on the dog lover spectrum. For professionals looking for new approaches to training issues, and for dog lovers who enjoy an interesting read this book will deliver. The book addresses many behavior issues, or dog quirks, approaches for dealing with those issues, and even a recipe at the end for "Super Motivating Treats". The book uses Case Studies to give real life examples. The Case Studies are very interesting to read and give the reader a sense of how the training ideas work in real life. The author doesn't just teach us about dogs. She also looks at the bigger picture of how dogs integrate with their families. This is a missing component in many books today that give solutions that may look good on paper, but don't translate well to real people living real lives. This book is packed with good information from an overview of dog learning theory to family support to those interesting Case Studies.’

“I love this book. It will have a prominent place on my bookshelf - to be used as reference, inspiration & to be lent to those whom I am certain will return it to me! Lynn's explanations of dog behavior & solutions in the "Case Histories" section are an education for anyone looking for realistic & reliable solutions for ‘dog quirks’, as she so charmingly categorizes dog problems. It is wonderful to have someone with Lynn's insight to guide us.”
