The S.L.E. Lupus Foundation opened a window on the world of lupus, unveiling a 115-square foot display window yesterday at 10 Rockefeller Plaza, to generate awareness for lupus, a dangerous autoimmune disease that primarily affects young women. The window also brings a message of hope to those already diagnosed, offering help from the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation in the form of services to patients and their families as well as the potential for new scientific discovery into the cause, care and cure of the disease.
Thousands walking through Rockefeller Plaza will learn about lupus as they pass the larger-than-life size window at New York’s famous landmark, home to the Today Show, NBC Studios, and the world’s most celebrated Christmas tree.
The exhibit draws attention to the often undiagnosed disease through facts and film with an inspirational video featuring patients and scientists talking about the disease and advances in lupus research. Often misdiagnosed and misunderstood, systemic lupus is a destructive and potentially life-threatening autoimmune disease that affects more than 1.5 million Americans; nine out of 10 people with lupus are women—most of whom are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 45. Lupus is a leading cause of kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and stroke among young women.
“If even one young woman walking by this window asks her physician about the signs and symptoms of lupus, we will have succeeded,” said Margaret Dowd, S.L.E. Lupus Foundation and LRI executive director.
For the third year, the nation’s largest preventive health company EHE International donated the display window valued at $150,000 on the Plaza side of the building to help the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation raise awareness of lupus to improve diagnosis – and find a cure – for this difficult disease. The space came to life with the design creativity of two young Fashion Institute of Technology graduates Stephanie Wiesner and Carolyn Onofrey who donated their time to help draw attention to this serious disease. The window is dedicated to raising lupus awareness through the end of the month.
