Stefanie's Team of Hope raised over $268,000 for Pelotonia 11, making the team the #1 non-corporate fundraising peloton in the event for the second year in a row. All of the funds raised will go to life-saving cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.
Stefanie’s Team of Hope was created in 2010 to honor the life of Stefanie Spielman, and to carry on her legacy of hope for millions battling cancer. The peloton of 108 riders were comprised of cancer survivors, caregivers, friends, neighbors and colleagues who joined together to ride in honor of Stefanie and all those affected by cancer. The funds raised in 2011 bring Stefanie’s Team of Hope two-year total to nearly $500,000.
"The first time I heard of Pelotonia was from Stefanie Spielman,” said Shannon Peterson, the founder and captain of Stefanie’s Team of Hope. “She was so excited about the significant funds Pelotonia would raise for cancer research. She would be thrilled and grateful for what this team and the entire Pelotonia community has accomplished in the fight to end cancer.”
This year’s Pelotonia ride raised $13 million bringing its three-year total to $25 million
"The success of the first three Pelotonias is hastening the day when we all will live in a cancer-free world," said Michael A. Caligiuri, MD, director of Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of The James. "Funds raised by Pelotonia riders and donors are helping Ohio State researchers - some of the world's brightest minds in cancer - better understand, prevent and treat this disease in its many forms. This is exactly the kind of community effort that Stefanie hoped to inspire in her tireless work to heighten cancer awareness and raise money for research that leads to cures."
Peterson believes Stefanie’s Team of Hope will one day raise millions for Pelotonia.
“Stefanie’s Team of Hope riders know what this fight is all about,” said Tom Lennox, executive director of Pelotonia. “They continue to put their time, resources and passion into curing cancer. They are an amazing example of a community coming together to defeat cancer. This is what Pelotonia is all about.”
“It is going to take all of us working together to end this disease," said Chris Spielman, Stefanie’s husband and Buckeye football legend “Thank you to everyone in their role in the fight against cancer. Together we will win.”
