Boulder, CO (PRWEB) December 02, 2011

Sustainability consulting firm Cleargreen Advisors has launched a new service to help companies develop Scope 3 (value chain) greenhouse gas emissions inventories.

In addition to years of carbon accounting and reporting experience, Cleargreen Advisors provided technical expertise during development of the new GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard. This new standard recently released by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), helps companies understand and report GHG emissions across their entire value chain.

According to Cleargreen Advisors Chief Operating Officer Renaud des Rosiers:

"Many companies are already measuring their Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions and reporting these through the Carbon Disclosure Project. These are the emissions from their direct operations and their use of electricity. But over 75% of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by most companies' products and services are not accounted for in Scope 1 and Scope 2. This new Scope 3 standard will let companies measure and report the rest. Knowing the GHG impact across your entire value chain is essential for a company to understand potential future liabilities and opportunities to reduce impacts and, in many cases, save significant cost."

The Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) standard was developed over a three-year period through a multi-stakeholder process and thirty-four companies representing a wide array of industries road tested the standard in 2010.This new standard will allow companies to confidently move forward with their environmental footprinting.

"For years we've helped our clients understand their Scope 3 emissions and the value associated with identifying reduction opportunities, but never before has there been an internationally respected set of guidelines to validate and standardize these efforts. We're thrilled to have the GHG Protocol provide a harmonized process," added des Rosiers.
