Chicago, IL (PRWEB) December 08, 2011
Children's Memorial Hospital is one out of 10 children's hospital nationwide to be recognized as a “Top Hospital” for patient safety by The Leapfrog Group, a national consortium of healthcare payers that promotes “leaps” in patient safety.
Since 2001, Leapfrog has been evaluating how well hospitals meet a wide range of evidence-based safety standards. Quality measures for children’s hospitals include the use of computerized prescriber order entry (CPOE) systems to prevent medication errors, appropriate intensive care physician staffing, safe practices and preventing hospital-acquired infections.
The “Top Hospital” designation is considered one of the most competitive national hospital quality awards in the country because it is the most complete picture available of a hospital’s quality and safety.
"This is a great accomplishment for our hospital and the result of our deep commitment as an organization to patient safety and quality improvement," said Patrick Magoon, President and CEO of Children's Memorial.
"Improving patient safety is an essential goal as we strive to serve all children, and it is a crucial aspect of care we will bring to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago when we move in June of 2012."
The Leapfrog Group’s 2011 annual class of top hospitals – 65 from a field of nearly 1,200 – was announced Dec. 6 in Washington, D.C. In addition to children's hospitals, the list includes university and other teaching hospitals, and community hospitals in rural, suburban and urban settings. The results of the survey are posted on a website open to patients and families, the public and employers and other purchasers of health care, http://www.leapfroggroup.org/.
Children's Memorial was also recently named by the Joint Commission as Top Performer in Children’s Asthma Care – one of only three children’s hospitals nationally. The Leapfrog Group is a coalition of public and private purchasers of employee health coverage founded a decade ago to work for improvements in health care safety, quality and affordability. The annual survey is the only voluntary effort of its kind.
Children's Memorial is the pediatric teaching arm for Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks Children's Memorial as one of the top pediatric hospitals in the country. The American Nurses Association also recognized Children's Memorial as the first hospital in the state — and the first pediatric hospital in the nation — to receive its prestigious Nursing Excellence Magnet Award in 2001. The hospital received the award again in 2005 and in 2010. Learn more about the Magnet Award.
