OPSWAT released their quarterly antivirus market share report today, with an additional section featuring hard disk encryption software. The report announces leading antivirus vendors and products in North America and worldwide, as well as Windows operating system usage in North America and worldwide. The hard disk encryption section of the report also shows market share and usage information worldwide, expanding on the hard disk encryption report OPSWAT issued last September.
OPSWAT, the industry leader in software management SDKs, interoperability certification and multiple-engine malware scanning solutions, analyzed more than thirty-seven thousand opt-in reports from endpoints worldwide. The reports, generated by OPSWAT’s free AppRemover tool, utilize the detection capabilities of the OESIS Framework to give insights to the applications installed on the endpoint computer.
Among the highlights of this quarter’s report is the announcement that Microsoft, Symantec and AVG were the top three antivirus vendors detected in North America. Microsoft maintained its top position in North America from OPSWAT’s previous antivirus report, while Symantec moved up to push AVG out of the second position. Worldwide, the top three antivirus vendors detected were AVAST, AVG and Avira, who all held their rankings from the last report.
“Free solutions are being installed by more and more users,” said Jeff Garon, Director of Marketing at OPSWAT. “In North America and globally, free products are continually at the top of our reports.” This quarter’s report shows Microsoft Security Essentials as the top antivirus product in North America and avast! Free Antivirus as the top antivirus product worldwide.
OPSWAT also reported that Windows 7 usage continues to increase in North America and worldwide, showing a steady trend away from Windows Vista. While decreasing slightly in both North America and worldwide, Windows XP still remains the dominant Windows operating system.
In the hard disk encryption section of the report, OPSWAT showed two separate versions of the worldwide market share: one including and one excluding Microsoft. With BitLocker included as a standard feature in many Windows packages, Microsoft installations greatly outnumber other hard disk encryption vendors. When Microsoft is excluded, TrueCrypt and BitDefender lead the market. Elisse Lockhart, who manages the OPSWAT Certification Program, commented, “Despite accounting for a high percentage of hard disk encryption installations, BitLocker is rarely enabled. Our data shows that less than 1% of BitLocker installations were actively encrypting, compared with 13% of TrueCrypt installations.”
