Tainted steroid injections used to treat back pain have been linked with causing a rare form of meningitis potentially affecting hundreds of Massachusetts and Rhode Island patients.
New England Compounding Center, a compounding pharmacy company located in Framingham, Massachusetts, has shipped 17,676 vials of tainted spinal steroid injections to 23 states, including Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The tainted injections – used to treat common back pain – have been linked to causing a rare and serious form of fungal meningitis known as aspergillus meningitis.
Local attorney Mike Bottaro is an AV Rated product liability lawyer and personal injury lawyer in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. According to Bottaro, the legal consequences of this company’s actions may not be fully known for some time. “There are early reports of over one hundred twenty reported cases of aspergillus meningitis and at least a dozen deaths. The CDC and FDA are still coordinating efforts to determine the full extent of just how many people have been exposed,” Bottaro stated. “We are monitoring the situation closely in our backyard and providing free consultations to those consumers injured in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. This is obviously a serious issue.”
Symptoms of aspergillus meningitis may not appear for at least a month after receiving the epidural injection. These symptoms may include fevers, headaches, altered mental status, nausea, and other pain. "Fungal meningitis in general is rare. But aspergillus meningitis -- the kind we're talking about here -- is super rare and very serious," said Dr. William Schaffner, president of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and chairman of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. "There's no such thing as mild aspergillus meningitis."
