This year has seen a heightened focus on the availability of information to people about their partner’s background. Claire’s Law (legislation to allow people to ask the police about a partner’s background) is currently under trial in some parts of the UK but is yet to be given a national start date.
According to The Telegraph, there are an estimated 25,000 perpetrators of domestic violence that have gone on to abuse two or more people, while two women a week die at the hands of partners. Domestic violence is also more likely to involve repeat victimisation than any other criminalised behaviour.
In 2010, 94 women and 21 men were murdered by their current or former spouse or girlfriend/boyfriend.
Many believe that having knowledge of a partner’s background could help protect some people from becoming a victim of abuse. Private Detective Bath is often requested to conduct background checks on current and potential partners.
A spokesperson from Private Detective Bath said:
“We believe it is important to find out who someone really is before allowing them to become a direct part of your personal life. We’re here to help and have tried and tested methods to gather information and give people all their required answers. These domestic violence figures are shocking but background checks can provide a warning to some of the people at risk.”
