Western Michigan Chapter of the Project Management Institute (http://www.wmpmi.org) is announcing that Experis, ManpowerGroup, the world leader in innovative workforce solutions, has agreed to contribute $10,000 as the Event Sponsor of THE Project 2013, an Inter-Collegiate Competition in Project Management. “We are grateful to WMPMI for giving us the opportunity to participate in this excellent education and life skills exercise. I am certain that the competing students will grow as individuals and our State will directly benefit from their efforts in crafting project plans around the theme of ‘Keeping Our Youth – Our Future – Here’”, said Becky Puckett the Managing Director for Experis for the State of Michigan.
"Public awareness of the rising number of jobless youth has intensified over the last decade," said David Arkless, ManpowerGroup's President of Global Corporate and Government Affairs in a recent Press Release. He continued, "The Human Age's new talent-based economy offers tremendous opportunities but it also demands more specialized skills from new workers." Project Management is one of those key specialized skills and this competition allows students the opportunity to work in real life business situations with a work product that will be viewed by companies all over West Michigan. For example, over 60% of the Students competing is THE Project 2012 have been offered Internships or jobs as a result of the Competition.
The competition last year saw 38 Students on eight teams from six Colleges competing for $10,000 in prize money and the field is expected to expand to twelve schools and perhaps as many as twenty teams competing again for $10,000 in the 2013 competition.
Schools have begun to sign up and teams will begin forming this Fall. The Teams, along with their Certified Project Management Professional (PMP) Mentors, will begin the process of constructing their project plans beginning January 7th, 2013 with the final presentations and winners being declared April 16th at a dinner meeting at Davenport University’s Campus in Kentwood, Michigan.
Dana Johnson, PhD, the School Champion for Michigan Technical University for both last years and this year’s competition said; “Our students are very much looking forward to participating again. I have already begun recruiting our teams. This is such a great hands-on experience and we really appreciate the opportunity to participate in the competition.”
WMPMI acknowledges the competition is an excellent tool to teach real world skills to students, to incite an interest in project management as a career and to ignite an understanding of how complex problems can be solved and solutions delivered using tools that have been honed in the fires of real life practice.
