On October 11th, Likewise Skincare, producer of sunscreen packed skincare products, comments on an article published by ABC News regarding the surgery some skin cancer patients receive after years of damaging indoor tanning.

According to ABC News, Kim Benz, a former indoor tanner, choose two surgeries after medications couldn’t cure the skin cancer tumors on her face. In addition to facial scars, Benz’s body has been plagued with skin cancer lesions. The article states, “Indoor tanning increases the risk of two types of common skin cancers, especially among those exposed before the age of 25, a new review of previously published studies shows.” The study, which was published by the journal BMJ, combined 12 studies on approximately 81,000 people.

The study reveals that indoor tanning may account for 170,000 cases of squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas. The article also states that there is an increased risk of non-melanoma skin cancers for tanning bed users younger than 25. According to Lisa Shariat, a representative for Likewise Skincare, “With new studies and research revealing just how dangerous indoor tanning can be, hopefully the tanning phenomenon within our culture will eventually disappear. I’m hopeful these studies will convince indoor tanners just how dangerous UV rays are. Additionally, I recommend people use sunscreen daily, as exposure to sunlight increases the risk for skin damage as well.”

ABC News affirms just how dangerous indoor tanning can be by stating, “In 2009, the World Health Organization placed all forms of indoor tanning in the same category as such cancer-causing agents as tobacco smoke and asbestos.”

Likewise Skincare was created by board-certified dermatologist and President of Likewise, Inc., Dr. Julie Pena. Likewise daily moisturizers are all-in-one but not one-fits-all.
