MADD is one of the largest victim services in the United States, and provides help to over 63,000 people each year whose lives are directly impacted by a drunk driver.
Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) October 04, 2012
According to the state of California’s Department of Alcohol and Drug Prevention, 195,879 people were arrested for DUI in California in 2010, the last year for which complete data is available. In the 1,768 cases where people died in DUI-related crashes that year, over half of them involved multiple vehicles.
California drunk drivers do not just affect themselves—in over half the cases in which they cause accidents, they hit other people.
Even more sobering, the average blood alcohol content recorded in a DUI arrest was .15 percent, more than twice the legal limit. Drunk drivers apparently are not just drinking enough to impair their driving; they are often driving while very drunk. Recidivism is also very high; nearly half of all those who are arrested for DUI will be pulled over again in the next ten years.
What Is MADD?
Mothers Against Drunk Driving was founded in 1980 by Candy Lightner, a woman who lost her 13-year-old daughter, Cari, to a drunk driver. Lightner quickly found that existing laws not only protected drunk drivers to a great extent, but that she as a victim was not even allowed to look at a driver’s record to determine if he or she had been cited for previous offenses. Determined to change the face of legislation regarding this societal problem, Lightner and her friends founded MADD. At that time, 60 percent of all fatal accidents were the result of alcohol.
Victims from all over the country rushed to open local chapters. Today, MADD is one of the largest victim services in the United States, and provides help to over 63,000 people each year whose lives are directly impacted by a drunk driver.
Demas Law Group Supports MADD
The professionals at Demas Law Group recognize that MADD is a cause worthy of our time and money. This year, Sylvia Zawadzka, Demas team captain for the “Walk Like MADD” event sponsored in Sacramento, is raising money to sponsor a walk team. All proceeds go directly to MADD for use in helping victims of drunk driving.
The “Walk Like MADD” event will take place on October 6 at Southside Park on 6th and T Streets. The Demas Law Group team will be there lending their support.
