Motorcycle Manufacturing in the UK Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

The Motorcycle Manufacturing industry peaked in the 1960s and has been consolidating since. Only one major manufacturer remains in the UK, and domestic motorcycle production ranges between only about 20,000 and 40,000 each year. Nonetheless, the remaining companies in this industry managed to find their place on the global market, with exports accounting for more than three-quarters of revenue. Strong demand from European markets supported growth over the past five years. As a result, industry revenue is forecast to expand by an annualised 10.4% over the five years through 2012-13 to reach £418.5 million. Over the next five years, demand will be supported by trends toward fuel-efficient travel, higher congestion, urban lifestyles and a weak pound. Motorcycles are more fuel-efficient than cars and have the added advantage of mobility. Revenue is forecast to increase modestly over the five years through 2017-18. For these reasons, industry research firm IBISWorld has updated its report on the Motorcycle Manufacturing industry.

Motorcycle sales benefit from growing export demand

London, UK (PRWEB) October 07, 2012

The Motorcycle Manufacturing industry peaked in the 1960s and has been consolidating since. Only one major manufacturer remains in the UK, and domestic motorcycle production ranges between only about 20,000 and 40,000 each year. Nonetheless, the remaining companies in this industry managed to find their place on the global market, with exports accounting for more than three-quarters of revenue. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Aries Nuguid, “strong demand from European markets supported growth over the past five years”. As a result, industry revenue is forecast to expand by an annualised 10.4% over the five years through 2012-13 to reach £418.5 million.

The global economic downturn adversely affected the industry. Production dropped by 33% in 2009-10, mainly in response to plummeting consumer confidence during the economic downturn. However, revenue is estimated to have rebounded 20% in the 2011-12 due to improved demand and recovering export markets. Industry revenue is forecast to grow 7.3% in 2012-13 due to product development and continued improvements in demand.

Nuguid adds, “over the next five years, demand will be supported by trends toward fuel-efficient travel, higher congestion, urban lifestyles and a weak pound”. Motorcycles are more fuel-efficient than cars and have the added advantage of mobility. Revenue is forecast to increase modestly over the five years through 2017-18.

Market share concentration within Motorcycle Manufacturing is high. The three largest motorcycle manufacturers account for an estimated 84.6% of industry revenue, mainly through Triumph's large market share. The other two major players will account for less than 2.0% market share each. All other companies account for less than 1.0% market share.
