As self-directed retirement plans grow in popularity among savvy investors, so does the potential for fraudulent investments and predatory schemes. The professionals at Next Generation Trust Services, LLC will share valuable insights into how to detect fraud and make investments that comply with IRS rules with a free webinar titled, “Self-Directed IRA Fraud and Doing Your Due Diligence” on Thursday, October 11 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. EST.
The one-hour informational webinar will be presented by Michael Griffin of HedgeACT and Jared Lopez, new accounts specialist for Next Generation Trust Services, a neutral third-party administrator of self-directed retirement plans. Griffin has served in executive roles in the alternative asset management industry for over 25 years, including the founding of a fund administrator, serving as the chief operating officer of a $750-million hedge fund, and director of Kleinwort Benson, Ltd., an international investment bank. He and Lopez will explain the importance for investors of doing due diligence when they are looking to invest using a self-directed IRA.
Griffin will focus on how to perform due diligence on hedge funds, which are allowable investments in a self-directed retirement plan. “Investment fraud within self-directed IRAs is a growing, hot-button issue,” said Jaime Raskulinecz, founder and CEO of Next Generation Trust Services. “Many people have trouble deciphering if an investment is legitimate or not. I cannot stress enough how important it is for investors to do their research before making an investment.”
Self-directed IRAs allow for a broad array of alternative investments including real estate, precious metals, hedge funds, and promissory notes; Raskulinecz pointed out that all of these are vulnerable to perpetrators of fraud. To that end, she will be interviewed on Tuesday, October 9 on Wise Women Radio about “Why Every Woman Needs a Self Directed IRA.” She will discuss how women can use self-directed retirement plans to prepare for a successful retirement; she will also talk about the potential for fraud within self-directed retirement accounts, what to look out for, and how to invest in ways that comply with IRS regulations.
“Although we do not provide investment advice, we offer guidance and education for our clients, and urge anyone who is considering alternative investments through self-direction to do careful research in advance,” said Raskulinecz.
