The gift of concocting a spellbinding and well-written story almost always runs in the family. Such is the case with author G. Alan Brooks and his grandchildren. The talented trio craftily collaborated with each other in coming up with fine literary piece that is a delight to read for all ages. After hours of brainstorming and exploring multiple ideas through different resources, The Adventures of Zumba and Rumba materialized.

Tender, thoughtful and tantalizingly cinematic, this first installment of The Adventures of Zumba and Rumba follows the brave and clever brother and sister – eleven year old Zumba and ten year old Rumba, who were abruptly separated from their parents when slave-trading warriors raided a village they were visiting. Here the reader will be taken to every nook and cranny of the African jungle: unfriendly villagers, an unexpected encounter with the lioness and her cub, tricking a witch doctor in the Baobab Tree, escaping from a giant water python, meeting a wise and kind hermit, seeking solace in a cave filled with wall pictures, and finally, scheming ways for them to be reunited with their parents.

In coming up with the series’ first installment, Brooks and his grandchildren did research on African folklore, wildlife, and local stories; reading books and learning about numerous aspects of the African Continent. The splendidly-spun story has been growing as an idea for many years. In the last two years, it gained more shape and direction as the grandchildren became almost the same age as Zumba and Rumba. Brooks’ grandchildren helped the characters think and act their age, while Brooks himself typed the manuscript and helped with ideas for the different adventure in each chapter.

This strikingly original work provides an inspiration to readers, both the young and the old, to spend more time with their loved ones, like how Brooks and his grandchildren spun the extraordinary tale of two African children in The Adventures of Zumba and Rumba.
