The legal industry bounced back in September after a downturn in August according to recently released data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
A comparison of the BLS data for the legal sector shows that the industry now employs 5,900 people more than it did in September 2011. The industry also added 1,000 jobs in September. Overall, the legal industry has added 2,900 jobs this year.
The total number of people employed by the legal industry stands at 1.12 million. Recruiters at legal recruitment firm BCG Attorney Search have also seconded the findings with their own data. As of the first week of October, they are working on filling up 3,000 attorney positions for law firms across the country.
BCG Attorney Search CEO Harrison Barnes says that there are many small and mid-size firms that are expanding and consolidating in the nation right now, so for the attorney in the right place at the right time, even this legal market can turn out to be a huge career booster.
In New York, BCG’s recruiters have partnered with law firms there to fill up 400 positions, with most of the attorney jobs in New York City being in practice areas such as litigation and banking.
The recruiters based in BCG’s California offices are coordinating with law firms in the major markets of San Francisco and Los Angeles to recruit 500 attorneys. Litigation seems to be the practice area that is doing very well with over 500 positions available across the country. The demand for patent attorneys for the IP field is also increasing with over 350 openings available across the nation.
