You may not think marketing or sales are important to learn as a Biofilms Researcher, but they are.
Bozeman, Montana (PRWEB) October 08, 2012
In today’s uncertain economic climate, college students are eager for advice to help them stand out and procure employment upon graduation. On Thursday, October 4, Dr. Daryl Paulson, President of Bioscience Laboratories, gave his expert guidance to a classroom full of Montana State University, Center for Biofilm Engineering students, on how to do just that. “Diversify,” was the central message of Dr. Paulson’s presentation. He encouraged students to ask themselves, “how do I fit into the big picture?” when considering life beyond the university system. He gave two models that included seeing a systems view of the world.
Biofilms are bacteria that form in moist environments adhering to a variety of surfaces as a slimy, glue-like substance, including the plaque on your teeth and crud that gums up your shower drain. Biofilm Researchers study the impact that this bacteria has on the environment and public health. Dr. Paulson touched on several areas outside of Biofilm Research itself that are important to understand in order to have a successful career in the field, including Business, Psychology, Culture and Society. “Specialize in many areas,” he encouraged. “You may not think marketing or sales are important to learn as a Biofilms Researcher, but they are.” He advised students to seek out a mentor and join Toastmasters to polish their communication skills. “Don’t be like everyone else,” he warned. Finally, he discussed the importance of seeing the whole picture and of the small picture to succeed in your career.
Dr. Paulson was invited to speak at Montana State University as part of the Fall 2012 Center for Biofilm Engineering Speaker Series, which highlights a different speaker each week throughout the Fall Semester.
