At a time when much attention in higher education is focused on online course opportunities for students that allow students to learn anywhere, CAPA International Education President John Christian is promoting the value of an international education experience that requires students to locate themselves in some place new and (possibly) unfamiliar.
Recently while on the campus of the State University of New York (SUNY)-Oswego to honor the school’s internationalization efforts, Christian, a SUNY-Oswego alumnus, told an audience of students, faculty, and staff that the unfamiliarity of his study abroad experience’s location taught him to “appreciate learning…(and) learn about the world and my place in it.”
“When I left my hometown of Troy, New York, to travel first to Oswego and then to London and then ultimately to Beijing, I learned that the world is an amazing teacher,” Christian told the group. “All you have to do is listen.”
On October 1, 2012, Christian, on behalf of CAPA International Education, pledged $200,000 over three years to foster international education on the SUNY-Oswego campus. $100,000 will support SUNY-Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley’s President’s International Initiatives, which will create opportunities for global learning to be incorporated into campus life for students, faculty, and staff.
The remaining monies will fund the José Ramon Pérez International Scholarship in honor of the faculty member who led Christian to enroll in his first study abroad experience. The scholarship will provide two full need-based scholarships for Oswego students. One scholarship will be used for students to attend the CAPA London Program and one for students to attend the Beijing semester program. Each scholarship will be available to students for three years, giving six students the opportunity to study abroad during the grant period.
“John Christian and CAPA pass on to future students the transformative cultural experience he enjoyed through his education at Oswego,” said President Stanley.
For 40 years CAPA has provided students with the learning experience of a lifetime. With both individual and group based study abroad programs, CAPA delivers quality experiential education across the globe. With program centers in Beijing, Buenos Aires, Florence, Istanbul, London, and Sydney, students are taught using My Education which blends theme- based classroom and experiential learning to give students the context they need to expand their understanding of the world in which they live. http://www.capa.org
