On October 12th, city bike manufacturer Linus Bike responds to an article published by The Orange County Register regarding plans to make San Clemente, CA infrastructure more bicycle and pedestrian friendly.
According to The Orange County Register, San Clemente is basing its change on the bicycle and pedestrian friendly streets of The Netherlands, a society in which cycling has become an increasingly popular form of transportation. The article states that Brenda Miller, founder of the bicycle and pedestrian advocacy group PEDal, is promoting a Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. According to The Orange County Register, “Miller discussed the concept at a Sept. 5 Planning Commission study session where she showed videos explaining how the Netherlands carried out its cycling revolution and how lessons from the Dutch can apply in America.”
Miller references the bicycle friendly infrastructure in the Netherlands, which opts to make cycling easier than travel by car in urban areas, the article reports. China Reevers, representative for city bike manufacturer Linus Bike, applauds the article stating, “Cycling is common in the Netherlands and their infrastructure caters to that. For San Clemente to base their infrastructure designs on that of the Netherlands, they are giving their community the opportunity to choose cycling over cars or buses. Cutting down on other forms of transportation will benefit the environment and choosing to cycle will keep the community healthy.”
The government of San Clemente has already started the transformation, The Orange County Register article reveals, by “creating a dedicated right-turn through lane for bicycles at a four-way stop along the Pacific Coast Bicycle Route. The city has marked a section of that route with ’sharrows,’ a reminder to motorists to share the road and another stretch has a dedicated bicycle lane. At North Beach, the city recently equipped new traffic signals to recognize the presence of a bicycle – not just a car – to trigger a light change.” Miller is confident the change will benefit the San Clemente community.
