Additional U.S. Patent approvals continue to distance PulseTech® Product Corporation’s innovative battery maintainers, smart chargers and other battery desulfation/maintenance products from competitive brands in the marketplace.
“The evidence is overwhelming that our patented, high-frequency Pulse Technology® system is unique in its ability to reduce the buildup of sulfation on battery plates resulting in the battery working at peak efficiency,” said PulseTech President Pete Smith.
Smith said the interaction of sulfuric acid with the surface area of the lead plates is at the heart of a batteries’ ability to create, store and release energy. Basically, a battery is able to store and supply energy if enough of the active plate material is available to allow an energy transfer to occur naturally.
“As good as today’s batteries are—including standard flooded as well as the newer sealed AGM types—all lead acid batteries suffer from the same main failure mode— the damaging effects of sulfation build up,” continued Smith.
The two new patents, essentially refinements to the original PulseTech® Pulse Technology patent issued in 1989, involve:
According to PulseTech Chief Engineer Wade Baker, the new patents provide a clearer understanding of what differentiates PulseTech’s Pulse Technology from other battery waveform systems.
“The new patents provide an improved understating of how our high-frequency pulse waveform reduces the sulfation crystal size, which is the major reason for premature battery failure,” he said.
Baker said what makes PulseTech’s Pulse Technology so unique and effective is a distinct pulse waveform. This waveform has a strictly controlled rise time, pulse-width, frequency and amplitude of current and voltage pulse.
“No other known battery charging or battery maintenance system has these specific characteristics,” he said, pointing out that competitive products traditionally use one of three pulses—sine, square and negative pulse waves.
“There are significant problems associated with each of those types of waves,” he said.
Though patent approval does not relate to the efficacy of product performance, Baker said PulseTech’s Pulse Technology has been scientifically validated through battery charger and desulfator test studies http://www.pulsetech.net/Content/Our-Technology/Test-Data-LP.aspx conducted with Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan and Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He said the extensive evaluations began in the summer of 1998 and concluded in the fall of 2000.
During these studies, these crystalline buildups (sulfation) were regularly investigated by X-ray diffraction methods. The X-ray diffraction data confirmed the positive effects of the application of this patented Pulse Technology on the battery plate morphology. It shows a more even distribution of lead sulfate crystals over the surface area of the battery plates. It also revealed a significant reduction in the size of the lead-sulfate crystals. These microscopic changes, kind of an electro-mechanical “stirring” or “cleaning” action on the plate surface, greatly improve a battery’s ability to accept and store more energy.
Consumer validation of Pulse Technology’s performance is another confirmation of the performance of PulseTech’s battery maintenance product lines.
In 2011, Steve Schultz, a reselling partner in Minnesota, conducted an independent test using PulseTech’s XC100-P smart charger and a popular competitive brand. The test was conducted for 7-8 months with the assumption that 120 test cycles equaled one-year use for an average battery. The resulting 480 test cycles (comparable to 4 years use) clearly showed battery plates maintained by Pulse Technology were clean of sulfation buildup and able to hold full charges, while battery plates maintained by the competitive brand were highly sulfated and could not operate at peak efficiency.
