New York, NY (PRWEB) November 08, 2012
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced a total of 28 deaths and 386 cases across 19 states involving the fungal meningitis outbreak that have been linked to contaminated steroid injections, a Nov. 1 ABC news article states. According to the article, officials have determined that the outbreak was caused by tainted vials of methylprednisolone acetate, an injectable steroid that is commonly used to treat joint and back pain. The contaminated injections were manufactured by the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Mass., and contained exserohilum rostratum, a fungus found in soil and plants.
Investigators are still looking into how the fungus got into the vials that were supposed to have been sterile. The ABC report states that health inspectors who visited the facility saw unsanitary conditions in proximity to sterile drug-mixing areas. U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials reported that two other drugs, used in open-heart surgeries that made by the same pharmacy, contained bacteria.
According to the CDC's website, meningitis is an infection that affects the lining of the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms of fungal meningitis include headache, fever, dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light, stiff neck, weakness and pain. Symptoms of fungal meningitis may not surface for more than a month, the CDC website states.
Anyone who has been treated with this steroid in the last three months should find out if his or her injection was from the contaminated batch of vials, advises New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm. "If you have received a medication that was potentially contaminated, it is critical that you seek medical attention especially if you are experiencing symptoms."
Manufacturers of all products have a legal obligation to ensure that they are safe for consumers, Wilhelm said. "This fungal meningitis outbreak is an example of the devastating and life-changing effects contaminated drugs can have on individuals and families. As the number of cases and fatalities continues to rise, I hope federal officials are investigating how this contamination occurred. There is no question that the negligent parties in this case should be held accountable."
