Higher prices and demand for preventative services boost revenue
Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) November 10, 2012
Great progress has been made in recent decades in understanding common oral diseases, such as tooth decay and gum diseases. The Australian population is ageing and more Australians are retaining their natural teeth over their lifetime. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Nigel Fitzpatrick, “these factors are promoting demand for dental services”. The Dental Services industry in Australia is expected to generate revenue of $6.56 billion in 2012-13, representing growth of 2.5% from the previous year. Industry revenue is expected to grow at an annualised 3.7% in the five years through 2012-13.
The Dental Services industry in Australia has been positively affected over this period by an increase in the volume of services rendered, a shift to more expensive services and a real increase in the average price per equivalent service. Fitzpatrick adds, “growth in Medicare funding of dental services has promoted industry growth”. Industry revenue is forecast to increase over the next five years due to growth in volumes and prices. A growing and ageing population, rising household incomes, will promote industry activity and a lift in government subsidies paid for dental services provided to children.
The largest four operators, including public sector operators, account for a low percentage of market share concentration. The largest industry player is Dental Corporation Holdings. Most dental practitioners are employed, or self-employed, in a privately owned practice. Some specialist dentists may have surgeries in two or more locations, and may hold hospital appointments. The largest players include private consolidators and public dental services, although many public services outsource part of their work to the private sector (and public dental hospitals are not included in the industry).
