Countryside, IL (PRWEB) November 12, 2012
Recently, 13 outstanding Latino undergraduates nationwide were awarded scholarships from American Honda Motor Company, Inc., and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (part of the National Science Foundation), based on their academic achievements, their interest in science and engineering, and their knowledge of the automotive industry. These students were presented with career opportunities, and awards of $5,000 each to aid with higher education, at a luncheon held by Honda of America Manufacturing in Marysville, Ohio.
The participating scholars were also introduced to Honda executives, where they discussed the future of the automobile industry, and were shown inside Honda's manufacturing and research and development operations. They were informed of their eligibility to participate in Honda's summer immersion/internship program for in-depth study of automobile manufacturing. A former scholarship recipient who had recently participated in the internship program, Nicholas Diaz, held a discussion with the recipients. Nicholas is a graduate of Ohio State University and is now employed full-time with Honda of America Manufacturing..
"It is exciting to be part of a company that not only makes quality products, but contributes to strengthening our communities as well," said Mike Bromer, General Manager at Continental Honda. "We share in the joy of helping these outstanding young scholars reach their dreams and congratulate them on receiving this award and recognition."
Continental Honda in Countryside, IL understands the importance of community involvement. Advancing opportunities for Latinos in education is just one example of how Honda is investing in our communities across the nation. Because of Honda's growing relationship with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Honda has increased its contribution for the 2012-13 academic year from $50,000 to $80,000. This allows scholarship and internship opportunities for even more outstanding Latino students.
“We created this program two years ago to not only celebrate the achievements of Hispanic students, but to also provide scholarships that would help relieve some of the financial strain associated with pursuing a higher education,” said Marc Burt, assistant vice president, Office of Inclusion & Diversity at American Honda (quoted in the Honda newsletter). “We are happy to see this program grow and to support even more deserving students.”
Students who are considering applying for this scholarship must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0, and major in business administration or in chemical, industrial, electrical, or mechanical engineering.
Continental Honda is proud of the support Honda and HSF invests in our Latino community. This scholarship fund enables many Latinos to afford a college degree and find employment after graduation.. Honda's contribution is another way of showing how dedicated they are in helping young people access "The Power of Dreams," a phrase Honda uses to inspire individuals to follow their passion and pursue their goals.
