Press Briefing 11:45 am, Monday, 19 November; Hofburg Palace, Mittlere Lounge - Immediately following the High-level Opening Ceremony:
The fifth annual Global South-South Development Expo (GSSD Expo) will take place from 19 to 23 November 2012 in Vienna to spotlight, showcase and promote innovative local solutions and partnerships in combating energy insecurity and climate change. The GSSD Expo 2012 is hosted by UNIDO, in conjunction with more than 20 U.N. agencies and partners.
The media are invited and encouraged to attend all Expo events.
At the opening on 19 November, statements will be made by John W. Ashe, President of the General Assembly High-level Committee on South-South Cooperation; Mourad Benmehidi, Chair of the Group of 77; Verónica Sión, Minister of Industry and Productivity, Ecuador; Kandeh K. Yumkella, Director-General of UNIDO; and Rebeca Grynspan, Associate Administrator of UNDP among others.
Energy and climate change crosscut all significant development challenges. This year’s Expo will showcase and celebrate concrete innovative solutions that demonstrate how governments and civil society actors from the South are expanding access to energy while also combating climate change, global health pandemics, and the lack of social protection for vulnerable populations.
The GSSD Expo is designed as a concrete response to the strong commitments made by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and by UN Development Group Chair Helen Clark to help developing countries to achieve sustainable and equitable development through the sharing and transfer of knowledge and innovative solutions that they themselves develop. This year’s Expo complements the Secretary-General’s ‘Sustainable Energy for All Initiative’.
Since its inception in 2008, the GSSD Expo has featured documented best practices from hundreds of partner countries, UN agencies, private-sector enterprises and civil-society organizations. To effectively build on this broad partnership, the six thematic areas of the GSSD Expo 2012 address Energy and Climate Change with particular focus on: (1) Industrial Development; (2) Decent Work; (3) Biodiversity, Forestry and Land Degradation; (4) Food Security; (5) Health, Youth and Women; and (6) Energy Access.
