Scien.net Publishes New Phenotype and Resistance Bibliography

The novel Natural Sciences Bibliographic Web Portal aims to provide comprehensive bibliographic information on the basic and applied life, earth and health sciences. The site has published over 1,212,000 references and has now newly included the two sections Phenotype and Resistance. While the publishers target to publish a total of over 21 million references until 2014, the site currently publishes about 10,000 items every day. References contain a minimum of bibliographic information including title, authors, publication year and source and almost 50% of them additionally contain a summary of the publication's scientific content. All references are tagged with scientific keywords to cross-connect them.

The aim of the Natural Sciences Bibliographic Web Portal including its two new Phenotype and Resistance References sections is to provide comprehensive bibliographic information on the basic and applied life, earth and health sciences. The information contains a minimum of bibliographic information consisting of title, authors, publication year and source while expanded references provide an additional summary of the publication's scientific content. All references are grouped into eleven main sections which are subdivided into ten categories each. The site as well as every section and category provides RSS feeds alerting the site's users of newly published content. Every bibliographic reference is tagged with up to twenty scientific keywords which cross-connects them beyond sections and categories.

The section Breeding Research contains information on breeding, a term that refers to the mating and production of offspring by animals or other living organisms. It refers to the activity of controlling or mediating in the mating and reproduction of organisms. Breeding is also used synonymously with the term reproduction, which is the biological process where new individual organisms are produced from parent organisms. The latest content in this category is also available through a Breeding Research RSS feed. The section currently contains over 42,000 posts and is subdivided into ten categories including Chromosome, Crossbred, Genetic, Genotype, Germplasm, Hybrid, Lactation, Offspring, Phenotype and Resistance.

Within this section, the category Phenotype contains scientific information on phenotype, the composite of an organism’s observable characteristics and traits, including the morphology, physiology, phenology, and behavior of the organism. Phenotypes come from the expression of an organism's genes, as well as the influence that the environment extends on the organism and the interactions between environment and organism. The category contains 680 newly published posts of which the latest inclusions are also available through a Phenotype RSS feed. It features posts on genetic, phenotypic and environmental correlations between some production characters in first two lactations of Red Sindhi cattle, genetic and phenotypic relationships among type traits scored linearly in Holsteins, and on genetic and phenotypic parameters of early growth traits of lambs reared artificially in a controlled environment.

The new category Resistance contains scientific information on disease resistance, a very desirable quality when it comes to the breeding of various plant species. Pests and diseases can drastically affect plants and crops that are used for consumption and commercial purposes, and it is important for people in the industry to develop ways for protection against disease. In fact, plant disease resistance is essential to the reliable production of food, and it has also shown significant benefits such as reductions in the agricultural use of land, water, fuel, and even agrochemicals. This category contains almost 4,000 newly published posts of which the latest inclusions are also available through a Resistance RSS feed. It features posts on heritability of resistance to Rhizoctonia fruit rot in a wide base cucumber population, greenhouse techniques to identify field resistance to the brown planthopper in rice cultivars, and on genetics and breeding for resistance to Verticillium wilt in alfalfa.

While the publishers of the web portal have a stock of 21,238,124 references of which 10,564,269 (50%) contain a summary, this information will be made successively available to the public until 2014. While the site has presently published a total of 1,212,000 posts online, the number of published bibliographic resources increases by 10,000 items every day. All items are interconnected with nearly 290,000 tags. The publishing status is reflected in the site's continuously updated tagline.
