Dr. Darren Conway PhD, the new Head of Medical Negligence at Injury Advice Lawyers, has been invited to speak at the 1st International Congress of Gynaecology and Obstetrics in China this December.
Other renowned speakers joining Darren include professors from Oxford University and the University of Hong Kong, as well as the President of the USA’s International Confederation of Midwives.
At the conference in China Darren (an ex- molecular geneticist) will use the example (detailed in one of his papers) of a successful clinical negligence claim for the wrongful birth of a child with Fragile X Syndrome to highlight avoidable errors in Prenatal Genetic Diagnosis.
Before qualifying as a solicitor, Darren worked in molecular genetics, during which time he obtained a PhD. As a geneticist, he worked on some cutting edge projects trying to find the genetic cause of specific neurological conditions. This was mainly at the Institute of Neurology and University College London, both in London and at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (USA). The conditions included Torsion Dystonia, Hereditary Essential Tremor and Juvenile Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (a type of motor neurone disease (known as Lou Gehrig’s disease in the USA)).
After this, Darren decided to use his expertise in the field of law, qualifying as a solicitor in 2003 and specialising in helping people who have suffered avoidable injuries in a medical setting. He now has almost 10 years’ experience of handling compensation claims having worked at leading niche practice Leigh Day & Co, regional multi-office law firm Freeth Cartwright LLP and the largest national practice, Irwin Mitchell, before joining The Injury Advice Lawyers.
Due to his background in molecular genetics, Darren has a particular interest in more complex claims for medical negligence. These include injuries to children at about the time of their birth as well as cases involving inherited conditions and genetics. For example, a misdiagnosis, or a delay in diagnosis, or where antenatal testing has resulted in the avoidable birth of a child with a specific genetic syndrome.
He has acted for both adults and children who have suffered avoidable injuries in a range of medical specialities including surgery, GP practice, cardiology, orthopaedics, oncology and general medicine, anaesthetics and, particularly, obstetrics and gynaecology.
Dr. Conway says: “Leading the Clinical negligence Team at The Injury Advice Lawyers is the perfect opportunity to use skills learned during my years in medical research and experience gained in other legal practices, to assist those who have suffered in a medical setting and recover the compensation that the law says they have a right to”.
Head of the Personal Injury Department, Zaf Bashir says: “We are delighted to have Darren heading up our clinical negligence team. His specialist expertise will add depth and breadth to our Personal Injury Department and ensure that we can offer victims of clinical negligence the very best legal advice for claiming compensation”.
