NewlyWish, the online wedding registry and e-commerce platform that helps small businesses, brands and artisans reach a national audience, has been selected as this year’s winner of the Women 2.0 PITCH NYC competition. The female-led, NYC-based startup was selected as one of 10 finalists from over 275 applicants from 24 countries to pitch at last Wednesday’s competition, held during Global Entrepreneurship Week at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom.
NewlyWish co-founder and CEO Amanda Allen launched the company after her own wedding registry experience, when she was forced to abandon her favorite brands and small businesses for the more convenient registries of major retailers. By helping couples create registries that truly reflect their individual personalities and styles, she now aims to serve modern desires for choice, customization and convenience.
“Couples lean towards big-box registries so their guests can conveniently shop from any location, but their standardized product selections always come with compromise,” said Allen, a Fordham business school graduate and former bank examiner at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. “Why shouldn’t registries be as personal and unique as every other aspect of the Big Day?”
In addition to registry staples like home decor, fine china and kitchen appliances, NewlyWish offers creative gifting categories like experiences and eco-products. Registry additions like cooking classes, sporting events and organizational and design services are just a few examples of NewlyWish registry options you won’t find at your neighborhood superstore.
In addition to serving a growing generation of choosy couples, NewlyWish helps brick-and-mortar businesses go digital with a proprietary platform that exposes wedding-specific inventories to a national audience. Company co-founder and CTO Mark Bartlett, who created the online shopping experiences of companies like Bobbi Brown Cosmetics and Isaac Mizrahi, designed the platform to be easier to implement and use than existing online merchant software.
“The unique business concept and growth opportunities were the key drivers in our decision to develop our own multi-merchant marketplace platform using Ruby on Rails and a Web Services architecture,” says Bartlett.
In addition to a year’s worth of free hosting from Rackspace, NewlyWish was awarded a meeting with Silicon Valley investor Mark Andreessen and an interview for the 2013 winter class of TechStars. Winning pitches from fellow female-led startups included Citizen Made, winner of a $25,000 grant from L’Oreal, and Activity Hero, winner of the Audience Choice Award.
