On November 23rd, 2012, Quorn Foods, Inc. responds to the good news reported in a Retail Times article by Fiona Briggs regarding the projected £1billion of meat-free product sales for 2013 in the UK as a result of the desire for healthy food.

According to the Retail Times article, “Sales of meat-free and free-from foods are set to top £1bn during 2013.” The article states that the increase has been steadily rising since 2007 with the meat-free market seeing a 39% increase in these past five years. According to Amy Price, senior food and drink analyst at Mintel, “The meat-free segment has benefited from a more mainstream positioning than free-from foods, with around one in 10 Brits avoiding red meat as part of a healthy lifestyle.”

The article mentions that the research done at Mintel shows that 15% of the British population is eliminating red meat out of their diets, as a majority reason being health benefits and a desire for healthy food. According to the article, “Meat-free foods continue to dominate the meat-free and free-from market with a 64% share.” The article states that the meat-free market is worth £607m in 2012 and will continue to rise in years to come.

Being a meat alternative business, this news is music to Quorn’s ears. “Quorn is originally from Britain, so it’s always great to hear news about vegetarianism back home. Eating vegetarian for health reasons is becoming incredibly popular on both sides of the Atlantic, which is always good news especially as Quorn is so tasty. While the numbers in the US are not as high as in Britain, they’re certainly rising,” says Quorn representative David Wilson. “For those who want to enjoy the benefits of the healthy vegetarian diet while but don’t want to give up their favorite foods, Quorn has developed a full line of meat alternatives that are so good that you won’t be able to tell the difference.”

Quorn launched nationally in the US in 2002. Unlike other vegetarian food companies, Quorn uses mycoprotein: a naturally occurring, healthy form of protein that replicates the taste and texture of meat while being significantly lower in saturated fats and calories than meat substitutes. Quorn offers a wide range of products including ready to serve meals, food for your barbecue, breaded meat substitutes, snacks and components to make your own meals from scratch. The wonderful taste of Quorn meatless meals provides the taste of the foods you love without sacrificing nutrition.
