Conflict in the modern day work force is part of every day work life, but unfortunately many employees lack the skills to successfully navigate communication barriers that are the result of unsuccessful, and sometimes emotional negotiation.
Leanne Harder who is the lead mediator at Olive Branch Consulting , states that for
“Human Resources Professionals, you are negotiating with employees at all levels. Sometimes you are coaching. Sometimes mediating. Frequently, you are doing damage control to protect your companies and the people working in them.“
This is true not only for HR professionals, but for every member of an organization.
In her work as an Accent Reduction Specialist, Jennifer Madigan from L2 Accent Reduction Centre , constantly hears stories from her clients who engage in poor communication strategies at work. She states ”Some of the conflict has to do with personality issues and some of it has to do with cultural issues. “Her clients ,who are in managerial positions, express how difficult it is to navigate the nuances of the North American workplace.
One of her clients recently stated that “ employees in North America have too much input. If management has chosen a particular team member to work on a project and the rest of the team doesn’t like that person, well it was the manager’s choice and everyone else should follow.”
A recipe for a communications disaster.
At L2 Accent Reduction Centre, Jennifer Madigan not only helps clients communicate by reducing unintelligible accents, but also helps individuals to communicate better by giving them insight from years of management and also from having worked for a previous institution where bullying and conflict was rampant.
Jennifer states that “Conflict goes beyond a language barrier. After all, two people who speak English as their native tongue can have a plethora of issues. Conflict resolution, like any other skill, should be taught before individuals enter the workforce. Having the strategies in place and being proactive rather than reactive would go a long way in today’s complex multi-generational work place. "
