A Look at The Hanover Theatre’s Past Five Years by the Numbers

The evening highlighted an increase in theatre memberships, Broadway Series subscriptions, and theatre attendance. The 2012 Annual Meeting also kicked off the Securing the Future capital campaign, aimed at raising $5 million to provide for the long-term care and preservation of the theatre.

The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts’ executive director, Troy Siebels, along with board members, staff and other attendees gathered for the 2012 Annual Meeting on Tuesday, November 13 at The Hanover Theatre. The theatre’s board and staff were proud to report another fiscally responsible year in the black, exceeding $7.4 million in total revenue and netting $64,202 after total operational expenses. The evening also highlighted another successful season with 189,142 in attendance. Subscription and theatre membership numbers exceeded 20%, volunteer of the year, Charlene Baron, was recognized, and the theatre’s Securing the Future capital campaign was launched.

“It’s only been four and a half years since The Hanover Theatre’s grand opening in March 2008, and in that short time we’ve come such a long way. Pollstar consistently recognizes us among the top 50 theatres worldwide for number of audience reached, and we have built a solid reputation as one of Massachusetts’ premier cultural institutions,” said Troy Siebels.

The 2012 fiscal year included a wide variety of blockbuster shows such as Blue Man Group, Diana Ross, Dr. Maya Angelou, The Moody Blues, Bill Cosby, Mannheim Steamroller, and the 4th annual production of A Christmas Carol. The 2012-13 Broadway Series including Mary Poppins, West Side Story, American Idiot, Experience the Beatles with Rain, Les Misérables and The Addams Family, generated over 800 new subscribers, increasing the number from 3,120 to 3,939. Membership numbers had also risen from 3,764 to 3,927, with Franklin Square Society memberships increasing to 214.

In addition to expanding audience reach, the theatre also took the initiative to reduce its carbon footprint through the use of renewable energy sources.

“Beginning in October 2012, approximately 80% of the theatre’s electricity is generated by a 5-acre solar farm in Leicester, Massachusetts, built specifically for us. We’re the first performing arts center in the country to utilize solar energy for the majority of its power needs, and we hope that many others will follow,” said Siebels.

Board and staff also recognized volunteer of the year, Charlene Baron, for her commitment to the theatre since its grand opening in March of 2008. Over the last year, Charlene has made use of her photography background and computer skills to help advance the communication and scheduling of our volunteers. She has made a photo guide of all volunteers and staff in order to help newcomers get to know their co-workers. Charlene also helped transition the theatre from an Excel-based scheduling system to online scheduling software.

The evening concluded with the launch of the Securing the Future capital campaign, which is a strategic effort aimed at raising $5 million to provide for the long-term care and preservation of the theatre. To date, the campaign has secured just over half that amount, through the generosity of the foundations, corporations and individuals. The eighteen month campaign is intended to accelerate the now public campaign to reach the goal.
